Linear Smoothing Morphological Sharpening + Kuwahara-Nagao Operator

چکیده

This report sheds some new light on an old and trusted tool in the image processing toolbox. The Kuwahara-Nagao operator is known as an edge preserving smoothing operator. This report shows that we don’t need to trust on our intuition to verify this claim but that it follows from basic principles. To that end we will first cast the classical Kuwahara-Nagao operator into a more modern framework using Gaussian convolutions to calculate the mean and variance of local image patches and using morphological flow fields to select the neighborhood of minimal variance. The main result of this report is the formulation of the PDE whose solution is equivalent to the iteration of a Kuwahara-Nagao operator using infinitesimally small neighborhoods. The resulting PDE is a combination of linear diffusion and morphological sharpening.

On the evaluation of edge preserving smoothing filter

For mapping or object identification, the edges possess important information. It would be desirable to preserve the edges in the original image, while applying smoothing filter to reduce the influence of noise. A number of filters are available for this purpose, including the Mean Filter, Median Filter, Kuwahara Filter, and Symmetric Nearest Neighbor Filter (SNNF). This study investigates the ...

Non-Linear Structure-Aware Image Sharpening with Difference of Smoothing Operators

In this paper, we propose an effective data-adaptive filtering mechanism for sharpening of noisy and moderately blurred images. We establish the connection of our proposed data-adaptive filtering procedure with the classic Difference of Gaussians (DoG) operator widely used in image processing and computer graphics. Our proposed filter renders a data adaptive and noise robust version of the clas...

Image sharpening by morphological filtering

In this paper we introduce a class of morphological operators with applications to sharpening digitized grey valued images. We introduce t.he underlying partial differential equation (PDE) that governs this class of operators. For discrete implementations of the operator class! we show that instances utilizing a parabolic structuring function, have special properties that lead to an efficient i...

A New Hybrid differential filter for Motion Detection

A new operator to compute time differentiation in an image sequence is presented. It is founded on hybrid filters combining morphological and linear recursive operations. It estimates recursively the amplitude of time-variation within a certain interval. It combines the change detection capability of the temporal morphological gradient, and the (exponential) smoothing effect of the linear recur...

A New Measure for the Eeect of Sharpening and Smoothing Lters on Images

It is well-known that the mean squared error (MSE) is an inappropriate measure for the di erence between two images in many applications. For one such an application, edge-preserving smoothing, an alternative was developed which takes both goals into account: the preservation or sharpening of edges and the smoothing of regions. In this paper, tests on human subjects are reported which con rm th...
